Hi! I'm Thang! My interest in music began when I was about 5 or 6 years old, but I started playing drums at the age of 13. Playing at my church sparked my passion for music and performing, shaping the path I wanted to follow. One of the most important mentors in my music career has been Professor Dave DiCenso at Berklee College of Music. From him, I learned how to approach the drums with groove, intention, and musicality. His guidance changed me by helping me become a more disciplined, confident, and complete musician.
One of the greatest struggles I faced was starting music later than many peers and adjusting to a new culture and language after moving to a different country. I overcame this by practicing daily, seeking guidance, and performing regularly at my church. Overcoming this challenge taught me patience, resilience, and the value of hard work.
A highlight of my music career was being accepted into Berklee College of Music at age 21. This milestone affirmed the years of dedication and opened doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and performances. On the lighter side, one of the funniest moments in my journey was when I accidentally started the wrong rhythm during a church performance. We all laughed about it afterward, and it reminded me to stay flexible and enjoy the process of making music.
In teaching, I focus on patience, practice, and passion. I want my students to leave lessons with confidence, creativity, and a deeper love for music, knowing that dedication and joy are key to their growth. I teach a variety of styles, including rock, jazz, fusion, gospel, and contemporary music, and I work with all levels from beginner to advanced. My teaching style is supportive, patient, and hands-on, emphasizing strong fundamentals, musicality, and creativity while keeping lessons engaging and fun.
